Applications for second Bar Leadership Academy will be available in December

The Bar will begin accepting applications for its second Leadership Academy class on December 1 as part of the regular committee appointments process.

Renee Thompson Board of Governors member Renée Thompson, chair of the committee that oversees the academy, told the board recently that applications will be available online, as are the committee application forms. She also said the required essay has been shortened.

The applications are due by January 15, the same deadline as committee preference forms.

Thompson and Bar President Eugene Pettis reported they’ve been seeing a heightened interest among younger lawyers about applying for the academy’s second class. They urged board members to encourage applicants, noting that the Bar is seeking diversity in gender, ethnicity, practice areas, geography, and other factors.

Members of the academy learn about the Bar and how it and local bar associations operate, develop a public service program, and are groomed for leadership positions in the profession and community.

Thompson also thanked board member Sandra Upchurch, whose law firm, Upchurch Watson White & Max, donated $5 to academy expenses for each person who liked the academy’s Facebook page or follows the academy’s Twitter account.

“It was really great to see their enthusiasm,” said Upchurch. “The people who are there are really remarkable in their dedication. They get involved and learn about what they’re doing. They’re teaching people to be better leaders in our profession and in our communities.”
