Patience Burns and Scott HawkinsA NEW AWARD WAS CREATED to honor the legacy and attributes of Marshall R. Cassedy, Sr., executive director of The Florida Bar from 1961-80 who died December 5. Patience Burns, executive director of the Palm Beach County Bar, is the first recipient of the Marshall R. Cassedy, Sr., Award, aimed to honor a local bar, a Bar executive, or staff members who provided extraordinary service to the Bar or to a local bar. Dedicating her professional life to the lawyers of Florida, Burns first worked with The Florida Bar from 1978-80, and then has worked at the PBCBA since 1980, serving as assistant executive director from 1980-89, until her promotion. She has served on several National Association of Bar Executives and Florida Bar committees over the years, and was also a volunteer consultant to the Program of Assistance and Review for the ABA, which provides counsel to lawyer referral services around the country. Burns has been associated with the Florida Council of Bar Executives, serving as a member and in each officer position since 1982. She served as a member of the board of directors of the United Way of Palm Beach County and is also a member of the board of directors for the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County. She is pictured with Scott Hawkins, immediate past Bar president.
