The Florida Bar’s Voluntary Bar Liaison Committee, along with the Clearwater Bar Association, will be hosting the 2013 Voluntary Bar Leaders Conference July 19-20 at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort in Clearwater Beach.
The Bar Leaders Conference is designed to promote leadership and improve existing programs of local and specialty bar associations. Directors, officers, and executive directors of bar associations from around the state are able to participate in workshops related to the operation of their associations.
Some topics at this year’s conference will include issues affecting staffed, nonstaffed, and specialty bars; how to recruit members; comply with state and federal tax filing requirements; tapping into resources of the ABA, The Florida Bar, and The Florida Bar Foundation; how to increase revenues without increasing dues; and how to develop quality CLE programs.
“The Bar Leaders Conference provides a great opportunity for individuals to learn how to become more effective leaders within their local bar associations,” said Michelle Naberhaus, chair of the Voluntary Bar Liaison Committee. “Participants are able to discuss various bar association programs, share what works in their communities, and gather helpful tips to address issues affecting the overall operation of their associations.”
In addition to the topic-specific breakout sessions, there will be a session for each of the appellate jurisdictions around the state.
“The jurisdictional breakout sessions facilitate discussion of joint initiatives and issues unique to each particular jurisdiction,” said Naberhaus. “It makes sense for bar associations in the same general locality to collaborate and exchange ideas.”
This year’s keynote speaker is Eric Pappas, founder and president of Results-Based Seminars, LLC. Throughout his tenure, Pappas has conducted more than 400 seminars for organizations focusing on leadership. He has been showcased in the New York Times, USA Today, and several other publications, and he wrote Leadership by Choice in 2012. During the conference, Pappas will also lead a breakout session focusing on teambuilding and productivity.
The cost for the conference is $175, which includes CLE credit, a boxed lunch on Friday, dinner on Friday evening at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and a continental breakfast on Saturday. The deadline for registration is Friday, July 12, and the registration form can be found online at www.floridabar/voluntarybars.
