$190,000 raised for legal aid

More than 400 supporters attended this year’s For The Public Good event, hosted by Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA).

Held at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina, For the Public Good raised more than $190,000, breaking all previous fundraising records for this event.

The event also honored members of the community who volunteered their skills and time to provide free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families. This year’s honoree’s included: Roy Rogers, Judge Ronald J. Rothschild, Michael Richmond, Evan Goldman, Donald A. Yarbrough, Charles Fox Miller, and the firm of Kim Vaughan & Lerner.

Kathleen Cannon, of the United Way of Broward County, presented $100,000 to LAS/CCLA to help launch the legal portion of its Mission United Initiative. In January, this section of Mission United will offer a broad range of civil legal services to veterans and their families. Currently United Way of Broward County and The American Red Cross have partnered to align existing military services and create programs where there are gaps in support.

“We are thankful to the attorneys and voluntary bar associations in Broward County who have stepped forward to assist our legal aid programs in making ‘Justice for All’ a reality,” said Barbara Prager, executive director of CCLA.
