YLD’s Law Student Division plans public service projects

The Law Student Division of The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division is inviting attorneys and law students from throughout the state to take part in Raising the Bar February. 16.

Each year, law schools throughout the state participate in the initiative by organizing one-day local public service projects.

Allie Menegakis “I think the great thing about The Florida Bar is that it provides opportunities for attorneys to give back,” said Allie Menegakis, president of the Law Student Division. “I think there’s a duty as lawyers to educate and be involved in the community, to be someone trusted in the community. The best way to do that is through community service.”

This year’s events include a cornhole tournament to benefit Compassionate Families in Jacksonville, a supply drive for Ronald McDonald House in Coral Gables, and a birthday party for the Big Bend Homeless Coalition in Tallahassee.

Bar President-elect Eugene Pettis plans to volunteer for a Law and Youth Conference, which aims to teach underprivileged children about the law, in Gainesville.

The conference is set for February 23, while all other projects are scheduled for February. 16.

Ashley Sybesma, Law Student Division co-chair and member of the YLD Board of Governors, said she hopes attorneys and lawyers will take advantage of the opportunities to serve.

“Talk to any lawyer and most will tell you that they are quite busy and have a hard enough time balancing work and their home life, let alone find time to do volunteer work,” she said. “Then talk to anyone who regularly volunteers in their community and they will tell you that the extra time and effort spent doing such activities is worth it and makes Raising the Bar a great and convenient way for lawyers to get involved when they normally might not seek out such an opportunity for themselves.”
