McCrea runs the ultimate marathon

Richard McCrea RICHARD MCCREA of Greenberg Traurig in Tampa ran in the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. It’s the world’s largest ultra marathon, run over a distance of about 90 km or 56.1 miles — and more than twice the distance of a typical marathon. To hard-core runners it’s like the Super Bowl of running. Only about 200 people from the U.S. ran the race this year, which includes 18,000 entrants and runs between the capital of the Kwazulu-Natal Province of South Africa, Pietermaritzburg, and the coastal city of Durban. But what makes this race different from all others is that runners must finish in 12 hours or less, otherwise they are not allowed to cross the finish line. In preparation, weekends would find McCrea rising at 3:30 to 4 a.m. to get in a run of anywhere between 15 and 30 miles. On weekdays before work, around 5 a.m., he’s either running, at the gym, or biking.
