Broward Circuit Judge Laura Marie Watson continued to defend herself Tuesday [Feb. 11] against ethics charges stemming from the settlement of a civil suit in 2004. Watson is accused of misconduct by the Judicial Qualifications Commission, which polices conduct by judges and has the authority to issue anything from a reprimand to a recommendation for removal from office. Watson was elected in 2012.

Less than a week after disbarred attorney Scott Rothstein described how he masterminded a $1.4 billion Ponzi scheme with the help of politicians, bankers and other members of the power elite, a federal jury on Tuesday [Feb. 11] convicted one of his former associates of three counts of wire fraud for helping him perpetuate the massive fraud. It took a jury of 11 women and 1 man less than two hours to decide that Boca Raton attorney Christina Kitterman posed as a top Florida Bar official to help her then-boss lie to nervous hedge fund managers, convincing them that the millions they invested in the then-flagging scheme were safe.

Jacksonville attorney Kelly Mathis, the primary target in the Allied Veterans of the World Internet casino case, is to be sentenced this morning. He's the lawyer who prosecutors say was the mastermind behind a $300 million business, a chain of 50-some illegal casinos in Florida that masqueraded as Internet cafes. Statewide Prosecutor Nick Cox indicated this morning that he'll ask for what state sentencing guidelines recommend. That's a minimum of 5 1/2 years in prison.
