A judge has agreed to hear motions to dismiss and challenging jurisdiction in the ethics case against Broward Circuit Judge Laura Watson. Fifth District Court of Appeal Judge Kerry Evander acknowledged during a status conference Tuesday [Aug. 20] that the circumstances in the state Judicial Qualification Commission case are unusual. Watson maintains the JQC, which filed a notice of formal charges July 24, lacks jurisdiction on several grounds.

Marianna attorney Frank Baker, 61 and others have been charged by a federal grand jury with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud against the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of making false statements to the FDIC, and one count of aiding and abetting a false claim against the United States. Baker was an attorney for Coastal Community Bank and Coastal’s largest shareholder.

Suspended Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi has stepped down from his role as Medley town attorney. His resignation — which is effective Thursday [Aug. 22] — was announced during a special council meeting Wednesday [Aug. 21] night by John Griffin, a labor attorney. On Aug. 6 Pizzi was arrested by federal agents in his Miami Lakes office on charges of conspiring to commit extortion.
