Introduction to the President

Eugene K. Pettis , President of The Florida Bar, 2013-2014

Eugene K. Pettis, a co-founder of Haliczer Pettis & Schwamm, has an extensive civil trial practice. He litigates matters in areas of medical malpractice, personal injury, commercial litigation, professional liability and employment law. Mr. Pettis attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, where he received both his Bachelor and Law degrees.

Mr. Pettis will be sworn in as President of The Florida Bar in June 2013, becoming the first African-American in the Bar’s history to serve in this position. He will lead one of the country’s largest bar's with a membership of more than 95,000 lawyers.

Mr. Pettis has earned Martindale-Hubbells top AV rating for his high professional and ethical standards. Throughout his career, he has earned numerous legal awards and accolades, including ongoing selection by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America in areas of medical malpractice and personal injury litigation, Florida Super Lawyers, the South Florida Legal Guide Top Lawyers list and Florida Trends Legal Elite. In 2013, Mr. Pettis was recognized by the Best Lawyers in America as the Lawyer of the Year for Employment Law.

He was a 2007 inductee to the exclusive invitation only American College of Trial Lawyers and elected by his peers into the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). In January, 2013, he was recognized by his ABOTA Chapter as The Trial Lawyer of the Year in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. Leadership Academy
The Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. Leadership Academy is a multi-session training program designed to assist a diverse and inclusive group of lawyers in becoming better leaders within our profession, while enhancing their leadership skills in their chosen path.

An initiative to encourage all the threads of the The Florida Bar organization specifically the diverse Voluntary Bars to leverage the Benchmarks: Raising the Bar on Civics Education materials and resources. This public education effort highlights the need for an independent judiciary and reviews the importance of the rule of law in our democracy.

Commission 2016 : Comprehensive Study of the Future Practice of Law
The commission will focus on the critical issues that are going to impact the practice of law. Members will study four issues: technology, legal education, Bar admission and Pro Bono legal services.

Get Involved
All Florida Bar members are invited to get involved in one or more of The Florida Bar’s sections, divisions, or committees. These various volunteer groups, along with the Board of Governors, do much of the work of The Florida Bar. Participation within the Bar offers an opportunity to serve in an area of personal interest, gain concentrated information and education, and develop a professional network.
