Hello. I’m Gwynne Young, President of The Florida Bar.

The 2013 legislative session is now just weeks away. The Florida Bar is already meeting with members of the Legislature and monitoring the interim committee meetings. Again this year, adequate funding for Florida’s courts will be our number one priority.

Bar leaders participated in the annual Judicial Branch Leadership meeting last month, joining with justices, chief judges, leadership of the court budget commissions and of the judicial conferences and chairpersons of key court committees. We will continue to coordinate with the Office of State Courts Administrator to provide information to the legislature, the public and Bar members about the financial needs of our state courts.

Throughout the upcoming legislative session, the Bar is committed to increased communications with the membership. You will soon receive a letter by email and published in the Bar NEWS outlining the Bar's advocacy efforts, and announcing a weekly website update which will be posted with talking points on key issues, links to bills and to legislators, and other valuable information.

With the new year, the Chief Justice and The Florida Bar celebrate outstanding pro bono contributions by Bar members, a judge, a young lawyer, a voluntary bar and a law firm. In 2011-2012, Florida lawyers provided 1.67 million hours of pro bono services to those in need and contributed $4.8 million to legal aid organizations.

Congratulations to all of this year’s pro bono award recipients and thank you to all of the members of The Florida Bar who do pro bono work and support legal aid.

I particularly want to congratulate this year’s Tobias Simon award recipient, Jeanne Trudeau Tate of Tampa. Presented by the Chief Justice, the award recognizes extraordinary contributions by Florida lawyers in making legal services available to the poor. Ms. Tate donated hundreds of hours as a volunteer, pro bono attorney and mentor to legal services staff and she is also a financial contributor to Bay Area Legal Services.

In closing, I encourage you to connect with The Florida Bar via Facebook and Twitter. Both social media programs provide current information about
--the courts including judicial openings
--new Bar programs and educational opportunities
-- and other important news.
Visit for homepage links to like the Facebook page and join the Twitter feed.

Thank you.
