FIRST CIRCUIT JUDICIAL NOMINATING COMMISSION SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE

As required by Article V, §11(c), Florida Constitution, the First Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission is seeking applications to fill the vacancy created as a result of the resignation of Circuit Judge Paul A. Rasmussen of Escambia County. The Florida Constitution requires applicants to be registered voters, members of The Florida Bar for the past five years, and reside in the first judicial circuit. Applicants are required to complete the “Application for Judicial Seat” available on the Florida Bar website www.floridabar.org.
Chief Judge Terrell has informed the commission that the judge appointed to replace Judge Rasmussen will be assigned to the Juvenile Court in Escambia County handling delinquency, dependency, termination of parental rights and other cases as assigned until at least January 2015.
Applications will be screened by the judicial nominating commission and, as required by Article V, §11(c), the commission will nominate for the governor no fewer than three, nor more than six, persons to fill the vacancy. The Florida Constitution requires the governor to fill the vacancy by making an appointment within 60 days of receipt of the list of nominees. Pursuant to Article V, §11(b), the appointment is for a “term ending on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in January of the year following the next primary and general election occurring at least one year after the date of appointment.”
Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 24, and Friday, May 25. The interviews will take place in the Court Administration conference room on the 5th floor of the Escambia County Judicial Center in Pensacola.
Applications may be obtained from The Florida Bar website www.floridabar.org. The original and 10 copies of the completed application must be received by the chair of the commission, Sally Fox, 30 South Spring St., Pensacola, FL 32502, no later than Noon on Friday, May 4. Per the Office of the Governor’s instructions, applications should be printed on three-ring, hole-punched paper and should not be bound.
