Pensacola attorney and current Florida Bar Board of Governors member Alan B. Bookman has become president-elect designate of The Florida Bar.

A Partner in the law firm Emmanuel, Sheppard & Condon, Bookman was first elected to represent the First Judicial Circuit on the Bar’s Board of Governors in 1996, and he has held numerous leadership positions including chairing the Communications and Legislation Committee and prior and current service on the Bar’s Executive Committee. His candidacy for president-elect was unopposed.

First involved in state Bar activities in 1976 after attending a young lawyers section meeting, Bookman then served for six years on the Young Lawyers board.

“I enjoyed the people, the level of debate, the work and giving back to the profession,” he said. “I’ve been involved ever since at the local and state level. It gives me a sense of accomplishment.”

Bookman, 56, will be sworn in as president-elect at the Bar’s June 2004 Annual Meeting in Boca Raton, when Kelly Overstreet Johnson, of Tallahassee, takes the oath as president. Bookman will become president of The Florida Bar in June 2005. He will be the first Pensacola lawyer to be president of The Florida Bar since Patrick G. Emmanuel served in 1985.

During his leadership tenure, Bookman said he will work to further insure access to legal services and the courts for those unable to afford the costs. He will also endeavor to assure that Florida’s court system remains adequately funded, and that the judicial process remains free of political influence.

Board Certified in Real Estate Law, Bookman focuses his practice in the areas of commercial and real property litigation, real estate law and probate and guardianship. Among his primary clients are real estate developers, bankers and investors. He is also a Certified Civil Trial Mediator by the Florida Supreme Court.

A native of New Orleans, Bookman graduated from Tulane University and Tulane University School of Law. He began his law career with the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG), serving in a variety of capacities including Senior Defense Counsel and Chief of Military Justice from 1971-1974. Upon completion of military service he joined Emmanuel, Sheppard & Condon.

Bookman is an active member of the Escambia Santa Rosa Bar Association and was its president from 1991-93. He is a past president and member of the board of Northwest Florida Legal Services. In addition to serving on The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division board, he was on The Florida Bar Foundation Board.

In the community, he is a past president and member of the board of the Ronald McDonald House, on the board of the Pensacola Rotary Club, a former president and board member of the Panhandle Tiger Bay Club and a member of the executive council of the Fiesta of Five Flags.
