Hon. E. Earle Zehmer Memorial Mock Trial Competition

THE FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Trial Team recently won the Hon. E. Earle Zehmer Memorial Mock Trial Competition, sponsored by the Florida Justice Association. Pictured from the left are Jonathan T. Gilbert, competition coordinator; champion students Kelly Scott, Elroy John, Megan Roth, and Dane Stuhlsatz; Judge Paul G. Byron; and G.C. Murray, competition coordinator and deputy general counsel of the Florida Justice Association. With Scott and John serving as dual advocates (the trial lawyers on both sides of the case, plaintiff and defense), their team went undefeated through four rounds, beating the University of Miami, the University of Florida, Stetson, and then St. Thomas in the finals. The members of the championship team shared the $2,000 competition first prize, and Scott earned $1,000 for being named “best advocate.” FIU Professor H. Scott Fingerhut said: “Our students are smart, savvy, and tough, and they are willing to do what it takes to be champions – a deep desire to achieve and the willingness to put in many hours of practice, on weekends and long into the night.”
