Definition
Admiralty and maritime law deals with the rules, concepts and legal practice governing vessels, the shipping industry, the carrying of goods and passengers by water as well as related maritime concepts.

Initial Application
- Use the Initial Application for Certification unless you meet the conditions below for reapplication.
- To download an application, click on the appropriate application. You will be asked if you would like to "Open" or "Save" the file (MSWord). It is advisable to save the file to your computer for future reference. Type in your responses on the application and print a copy. Attach any required documents, enclose the $250 application fee, and mail your application to: The Florida Bar, Legal Specialization and Education Dept., 651 E. Jefferson Street, Tallahassee, FL 32399-2300.
To obtain a current listing of your board certification CLE credit hours, please contact the staff listed below. You may access your CLER credit hours on the Bar's Website, but certification credit hours are not yet available online
The filing period opens July 1, 2011 and applications must be postmarked by August 31, 2011.
Reapplication for Initial Certification
You may submit an Reapplication for Initial Certification only if you meet one of the following conditions. In order to become eligible to sit for the 2012 Admiralty & Maritime Exam, the abbreviated application must be postmarked by August 31, 2011.
1. You submitted an Initial Application for Certification by August 31, 2010 which was approved, but you were unable to sit for the 2011 Admiralty & Maritime Law Exam.
2. You submitted an Initial Application for Certification by August 31, 2010 which was approved, you took the 2011 Admiralty & Maritime Exam, but you were unsuccessful in obtaining a passing score. (Please note if you were unsuccessful on the 2010 and 2011 exam, you are not eligible to apply for the 2012 Admiralty & Maritime Law exam, but you may reapply in 2013 by submitting the Initial Application for Certification.)

Due to Recertify in 2011?
- If you were originally certified in 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 or 2006, you are due to recertify in 2011. The application must be postmarked by <June/August 15, 2011>. All requirements for recertification must be completed by <May/July 31, 2012> unless you file a Recertification Extension Application.

Need more time to meet the requirements for recertification? To request a one-time 3-month extension submit a Recertification Extension Application along with the fee by <June/August 15>, 2011.
