‘Who We Are’ tells the YLD’s story

Katherine Hurst Miller All over the internet, short explanatory videos have been popping up as easy communication tools for businesses and organizations.

Aligned with the times when it comes to technology, the Young Lawyers Division has created such a video that will be affixed to their webpage and social media accounts in mid-January.

quote The two-minute “Who We Are” animated video describes in very simple terms the functions of the YLD. The division’s President Katherine Hurst Miller said the short production is “words dancing around a screen,” with a little bit of rock ’n’ roll background music to express the youthful side of its membership. Miller explained that in an effort to keep the video from becoming outdated in the near future, it is simple and void of characters, cartoons, objects, or theatrical scenes.

“I like it because it doesn’t have dates. It doesn’t have names. It doesn’t have pictures,” she said, but it expresses “all the things that we’re doing as plainly and publicly as possible.”

Miller wrote the script for the video with input from President-elect Zack Zuroweste and Communications Chair Santo DiGangi. Argonaut Productions in Jupiter brought the creative project to life, and the YLD president hopes the YLD’s 25,000 members — the primary audience — will get informed and excited about The Florida Bar.

Miller said young lawyers often find themselves a part of the Bar with little knowledge about its inner workings, so effective communication is helpful.

“You’re automatically a part of this organization, so you may not know all of things that we do,” she asserted. “I really don’t want to hide it under a bushel basket. This video is trying to give you more information about us.”

The YLD president said she wanted to efficiently communicate the value system of the Board of Governors and young lawyers today. She said videos from other national organizations, such as the Junior League, inspired the project.

A few phrases in the video include:

“Call us crazy, but we want more from our jobs. More from our lives. More from ourselves.”

“We serve with thousands of dollars in grants.”

“Together we are changing the profession for the better.”
