Red Mass set for Sarasota

The Red Mass for the 12th Judicial Circuit will be celebrated by Most Rev. Frank Dewane, bishop of the Diocese of Venice, on March 13 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, 3930 17th Street, Sarasota.

The first recorded Red Mass was held in the Cathedral of Paris in 1245. King Edward II in 1310 started the English tradition of opening the term of court with the celebration of the Red Mass. Judges of the High Court of England and all doctors of law wore red robes or academic hoods; hence, the popular name “Red Mass.” At the Red Mass, there are prayers for peace, justice, and wisdom for those who serve in the law.

Lawyers, judges, law enforcement, government, and public service officials, their families and staff are invited to attend the Red Mass.
