Foundation seeks Bar fee statement contributions
Donations support Children’s Legal Services

The Florida Bar Foundation is asking Bar members to make tax-deductible contributions to its Children’s Legal Services projects campaign when they fill out their 2017-18 fee statement to help bring the benefits of the law and of lawyers to the lives of poor children.

Michael HigerThe Foundation will dedicate Bar members’ contributions to legal assistance to children through grants to legal aid and legal services programs across the state.

“A million Florida children live in poverty,” said Bar President-elect Michael Higer. “That’s about a quarter of our state’s kids. In terms of our overall population, one out of every 20 Floridians is a child living in poverty. Many of these same children have serious health issues or learning disabilities or are in foster care. Often these children are denied the health care or special education benefits and other services the law guarantees them.”

Of the $926,405 in Children’s Legal Services grants the Foundation distributed last year, more than a third, totaling $311,480, came from contributions by Florida Bar members via the fee statement, Higer said.

“Florida lawyers can be very proud of this level of support,” said Higer, noting 100 percent of those donations go directly to children’s legal assistance projects.
