Broward County Bar Association - At its January 14, Board of Director’s meeting, the Broward County Bar Association (BCBA) Board of Directors recognized Ray Ferrero, Jr. for his extraordinary leadership and commitment to the legal of community in Broward County and in the State of Florida. Orange County Bar Association - The Orange County Bar Association (OCBA) will present its most comprehensive Bench Bar Conference with more than 50 judges, 60 sessions, and the opportunity for attorneys to earn up to 7.0 CLE – all in one day. The conference will be held on April 11 at the beautiful Loews Royal Pacific Hotel at Universal Orlando. Chief Judge Belvin Perry, Jr. will be closing the Ninth Judicial Circuit courts on the April 11, thus underscoring the importance of the conference and the unique opportunity it offers attorneys to engage with judges from across Central Florida. Members of the judiciary representing federal, county, and circuit benches from Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Volusia, and Brevard counties, will present on a wide variety of topics, including specialty tracks in technology, family law, business law, intellectual property, estate, probate, bankruptcy, civil and personal injury, criminal and juvenile, appellate, and employment law. Conference registration is now open. The registration fee is $300 through March 31, and $350 thereafter through April 1. Breakfast, lunch, and the networking reception are included in the registration fee.

Palm Beach County Bar Association - The Bench Bar Conference will be held on Friday, March 7 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The Bench Bar Conference is an opportunity for attorneys and judges to meet informally in a roundtable atmosphere to discuss issues of concern to both the Bench and Bar.

Sarasota Bar Association - The Sarasota County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division is pleased to host its second All-Bar Outing to Spring Training Baseball on March 27, to watch the Baltimore Orioles host the Tampa Bay Rays. This event is open to all SCBA members and their families and guests. Only 100 tickets are available, so register quickly!

St. Petersburg Bar Foundation - The St. Petersburg Bar Foundation is hosting an “Island Casual” Progressive Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 6-10:30 p.m. at the Placido Bayou in St. Petersburg. Tickets are $75/person and all proceeds will benefit the projects of the St. Pete Bar Foundation. For more information, please visit

Tallahassee Bar Association - A record turn-out enjoyed the 18th Annual TBA/LAF Chili Cook Off held on Jan. 29 at Goodwood Museum and Gardens. The distinguished Chili Cook Off judges were Federal Magistrate Charles Stampelos, First DCA Judge Simonne Marstiller, Circuit Judge Barbara Hobbs, Leon County Judge Nina Ashenafi Richardson and Celebrity Judge Brad Randall with LexisNexis. F. Malcolm Cunningham, Sr. Bar Association - The 13th Annual William H. Holland Scholarship Luncheon will be held on Friday, February 21 in celebration of Black History Month & Educational Empowerment. Tampa Hispanic Bar Association - The Annual Scholarship Gala honoring retired 2d DCA Judge E.J. Salcines was held in November. Steve M. Barbas received the first ever E.J. Salcines Spirit of Tampa Award; Frank Angones (first Cuban born Florida Bar President was the keynote speaker) and the Honorable E.J. Salcines (retired 2d DCA Judge) was the recipient of the Luis “Tony” Cabassa Award and main honoree of the night. The Honorable Virginia M. JNC Vacancies - President Eugene K. Pettis announced that the deadline for Bar members to apply for the Bar's recommendation of six lawyers for two vacancies on each Judicial Nominating Commission to the Governor for the Governor's appointment has been extended to Friday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m. Each appointee will serve a four-year term commencing July 1, 2014. Applicants must be engaged in the practice of law and a resident of the territorial jurisdiction served by the commission to which the member is applying. Applicants must comply with state financial disclosure laws. Screening committees of the Board of Governors will review all JNC applications. The Executive Committee will then make recommendations to the Board of Governors. The application is posted on the Bar's website or members may call Bar headquarters at (850) 561-5757, to obtain the application.

Informed Voters-Fair Judges Project
The Florida Bar is pleased to announce its partnership with the
Informed Voters-Fair Judges Project of the National Association of Women Judges. The project focuses on increasing the knowledge of citizens regarding the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary. BLSE - The Board of Legal Specialization and Education (BLSE) received 509 applications for board certification for the 2014 class of examinees. Initial certification applications increased 15 percent over those filed for 2013 with 17 of the 24 board certification areas receiving more applications. Applications for International Law jumped by 300 percent. Only board certified lawyers may use the terms "specialist," "expert" or "B.C.S." for Board Certified Specialist when referring to their legal credentials. Board certification is valid for five years. Over the five year period, the attorney must continue to practice in the specialty area and attend Florida Bar-approved continuing legal education courses.
