Florida Bar member Charles D. Michel was promoted to the rank of four-star admiral in the U.S. Coast Guard. As vice commandant, Michel oversees the Coast Guard’s operations, strategic development, organizational governance, and manage-ment of the service’s more than 58,000 employees and 30,000 volunteers.

Coast Guard logo “I am humbled to be the first Coast Guard vice commandant promoted to the rank of four-star admiral,” said Michel, a native of Brandon who graduated from the University of Miami School of Law summa cum laude in 1992, after graduating from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1985.

“I would encourage motivated, enthusiastic law students and attorneys who want to serve their country to reach out to the United States Coast Guard. As an attorney, I have had the opportunity to practice a broad spectrum of the most unique and challenging areas of law.”

Following passage of the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2015, President Obama nominated and the Senate confirmed Michel for promotion to the rank of admiral. This aligns the leadership structure of the Coast Guard to that of the other armed services and recognizes the important role of the vice service chief at the national level.
