Bar supports efforts to protect immigrants from being exploited

The Florida Bar, at the request of the ABA, agreed to support legislation in Congress to protect individuals needing help on immigration matters from being exploited by nonlawyers.

The Board of Governors, at its recent Tallahassee meeting, unanimously adopted the recommendation of the Statewide UPL Committee to support HR 2936, which is titled the Protecting Immigrants from Legal Exploitation Act. The bill creates penalties for nonlawyers who prey on immigrants and others by offering services that ultimately are not provided and which cost the unwitting clients lost time and money and perhaps lead to deportation.

A notice of the Bar legislative position was in the February 15 News.
