The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division is gearing up for its annual Affiliate Outreach Conference, set for January 17-18 at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Treasure Our History,” which encourages young lawyers to honor the past while embracing the many changes the practice of law is set to endure in the coming years.
“We’re doing a pirate theme because we’re going to be in Tampa, so you think of Gasparilla,” said Chrystal Thornton, co-chair of the event. “There is also a treasures theme, more so looking at the law and how it’s changed, treasures that the law has afforded to us new members as well as experienced lawyers that are now seeing these changes come to fruition, whether through technology, diversity, or other areas.”
The conference is open to members of recognized young lawyer affiliates in Florida and designated Law Student Division representatives.
The YLD plans to award money to affiliate young lawyer organizations in its annual competition for project grant funding. Thornton said the YLD hopes to provide more funding at the 2014 conference than the year before, in which the division awarded more than $40,000.
Typical awards range between $500 and $1,500, though projects have received as much as $5,000 in the past.
The early deadline for applications is November 29, followed by a regular deadline of December 20.
AOC Committee also plans to email details and applications to affiliates and law schools.
Applicants must make five-minute presentations on their proposed projects at the conference.
At the event, the YLD also plans to present its annual affiliate awards, including Affiliate of the Year to a local organization for excellence in public service, member service, and creative use of resources.
Awards also will be given for the most outstanding public service and member service projects completed by local affiliates in the previous year, with applications due December 20. Two members of each local affiliate are each eligible to receive a $400 reimbursement for attendance at the conference.
