New Professionalism Requirement Amendment to Rule 6-10.3(b)

Effective March 5, 2019, 5 of the required 33 credit hours must be in approved legal ethics, professionalism, bias elimination, substance abuse, or mental illness awareness programs, with at least 1 of the 5 hours in an approved professionalism program.

Compliance for the new rule will begin in the member’s next reporting cycle following the March 5, 2019 effective date.

Compliance for 33 credit hours of approved continuing legal education activity begins with the next reporting cycle after 1-1-17

Effective January 1, 2017, each member shall complete a minimum of 33 credit hours of approved continuing legal education activity every 3 years. Five of the 33 credit hours must be in approved legal ethics, professionalism, bias elimination, substance abuse, or mental illness awareness programs and 3 of the 33 credit hours must be in approved technology programs which are included in, not addition to, the regular 33 credit hour requirement. If a member completes more than 33 credit hours during any reporting cycle, the excess credits cannot be carried over to the next reporting cycle.

In person attendance

Amendments Rules 6-12 eliminate the requirement for in-person attendance at the three basic skills courses and allow the Bar to offer basic skills courses in-person, electronically, and online.

The rule requires that you have 30 total hours of continuing education each cycle. Your total hours will appear as “General” on the website when you enter credits or check your hours. 5 of the 30 hours must be in ethics or professionalism. You still need 30 total hours. In other words, your “General” column must equal 30. The Ethics/Professionalism column must equal 5. You do not add General + Ethics/Professionalism to determine total number of hours.
