Attorney Applicants Sought for Florida Board of Bar Examiners
Attorney applicants are being sought to fill three vacancies on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. A joint screening committee of Florida Bar Board of Governors members and Board of Bar Examiners members will recommend nine nominees for three attorney vacancies at its May 10, 2024, meeting.
The nominations will then be forwarded to the Supreme Court of Florida, which will appoint three attorneys to fill five-year terms commencing November 1, 2024, and expiring October 31, 2029.
The Board of Bar Examiners ensures that applicants seeking admission to The Florida Bar have met the requirements of the rules with regard to character and fitness, education and technical competence prior to recommending to the Supreme Court of Florida an applicant’s admission to The Florida Bar.
Attorneys must be an active member of The Florida Bar for at least five years, maintain active membership while serving on the board, and be deemed qualified by the court to assess whether applicants meet the essential eligibility requirements for admission under the rules of the Supreme Court Relating to Admissions to the Bar. Appointment or election to the bench at any level of the court system will disqualify any applicant. Law professors or trustees are ineligible.
Board of Bar Examiners members must be able to attend approximately 10 meetings a year in various Florida locations. Members should be willing and able to devote the equivalent of 3 to 4 days’ work a month, or up to 350 or more hours per year on board business, depending on committee assignments. Actual travel expenses connected with the meetings and examinations are reimbursed.
The vacancies will occur November 1, 2024, with the expiration of the terms of Chair Melinda McNichols of Miami Springs, and Paul J. Schwiep and Stanley H. Wakshlag, both of Miami.
Applications will be accepted until close of business on Monday, March 25, 2024. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of the required application. The joint screening committee will review all applications and may request telephone or personal interviews.
Persons interested in applying for these vacancies may download the Application for Special Appointment or call Bar headquarters at 850-561-3127 to obtain the application form. Completed applications may be submitted via email or mailed to the Executive Director, The Florida Bar, 651 E. Jefferson St., Tallahassee, FL, 32399-2300.
