Nonattorney members of the public are invited to volunteer for a vacancy on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners.

A joint screening committee of members of The Florida Bar Board of Governors and Florida Board of Bar Examiners will recommend three nominees for the vacancy to the Supreme Court of Florida, which will appoint one public member for a three-year term commencing November 1, 2024, and expiring on October 31, 2027. The Board ensures that applicants seeking admission to The Florida Bar have met the requirements of the rules with regard to character and fitness, education and technical competence prior to recommending to the Supreme Court of Florida an applicant’s admission to The Florida Bar.

A public member volunteer must have a bachelor’s degree and be deemed qualified by the court to assess whether applicants for admission to The Florida Bar meet the essential eligibility requirements for admission under the Rules of the Supreme Court Relating to Admissions to the Bar. Past public member volunteers have possessed experience in education, medicine, psychology, science, accounting, statistical analysis, the military, and various other professions.

Board of Bar Examiners members must be able to attend approximately 10 meetings a year in various Florida locations. Board members should be willing and able to devote the equivalent of 3 to 4 days’ work a month, or up to 350 or more hours per year on board business, depending on committee assignments. Actual travel expenses connected with the meetings and examinations are reimbursed.

The vacancy will occur on November 1, 2024, with the expiration of the term of Paula S. O’Neil Ph.D. of San Antonio, Texas.

Applications will be accepted until close of business on Monday, March 25, 2024. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of the required application. The joint screening committee will review all applications and may request telephone or personal interviews.

Persons interested in applying for these vacancies may download the Florida Board of Bar Examiners Questionnaire for Public Member vacancy or call Bar headquarters at 850-561-3127, to obtain the application form. Completed applications may be submitted via email or mailed to the Executive Director, The Florida Bar, 651 E. Jefferson St., Tallahassee, FL, 32399-2300.
