This past October, a diverse group of stakeholders were convened for the first ever Florida Bar Criminal Justice Summit to provide in-depth education and awareness of key criminal justice related issues, share and discover ideas and potential best practices, and provide state leaders with different perspectives on potential solutions.
The summit was convened by Bar President Michelle Suskauer as an opportunity to discuss problems in a system that has a high incarceration rate, high recidivism, little leeway in sentencing guidelines, and funding challenges.
“Although The Florida Bar cannot take official positions on any of these issues, we are committed to helping further these discussions. Our members are uniquely qualified to provide important perspectives and to facilitate more conversations around criminal justice reform in the future,” President Suskauer wrote in her January/February Journal president’s page. “We will continue bringing stakeholders together in order to further define problems and identify solutions that will move Florida’s criminal justice system in a more positive direction. This is just the beginning.”
Now, those who were not able to attend can watch the sessions to hear the speakers’ and panelists’ presentations with in-depth data and background on the top issues in criminal justice reform. These videos qualify for free CLE credit for Florida lawyers.
