    Attorney Jason Berger is the 19th Judicial Circuit’s honoree among 22 lawyers to receive The Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Awards at a Jan. 30 ceremony at the Supreme Court of Florida in Tallahassee. Berger, 47, said he plans to go to Tallahassee for the ceremony, accompanied by his wife, Jessica, and their two teenage daughters. “I love being an attorney,” Berger said. “I really enjoy people and enjoy serving and making a difference. You learn something new every day.”

    Hoan Ton-That’s company, Clearview AI, devised a groundbreaking facial recognition app that matches photos of unknown people to their online images. He provided the app to hundreds of law enforcement agencies, ranging from local police officers in Florida to the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. Federal and state law enforcement officers have used the app to help solve shoplifting, identity theft, credit card fraud, murder and child sexual exploitation cases.

    MIAMI JUDGE WHO SANCTIONED BILZIN SUMBERG IS REMOVED FROM CASE

    Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Beatrice Butchko has been disqualified from a breach-of-contract lawsuit after hitting Bilzin, Sumberg, Baena, Price & Axelrod with sanctions over alleged foul play. The Third District Court of Appeal said it felt compelled to agree that the judge — placed in a “delicate and difficult” position — should have stepped down from the case. Although Bilzin Sumberg withdrew from the case, the appellate court found the firm’s former client’s concerns about judicial impartiality were not unreasonable, because the judge had implicated him in the alleged wrongdoing.

    FORMER MEDICAL EXAMINER SUES CLAIMING SEX DISCRIMINATION

    Andrea Minyard, the former medical examiner for Florida’s First Judicial Circuit, has sued Escambia, Santa Rosa and Walton counties, as well as an umbrella organization called District One Medical Examiner Support Inc., alleging her successor is being paid more than she was purely because he is a man. The suit claims recently hired Medical Examiner Timothy Gallagher is being paid $350,000 annually while Minyard, who was more qualified and experienced, was paid $250,000 per year. Okaloosa County was left out of the lawsuit because they added language to a previous legal settlement with Minyard.

    JUDGE DISMISSES LAWSUIT OVER ARMED SAFETY ASSISTANTS AT DUVAL SCHOOLS

    A judge has dismissed an amended lawsuit filed by Duval County parents of several public-school students last year that sought to prohibit the Duval County School District from having armed School Safety Assistants (SSAs) on school campuses. The judge said SSAs are covered by an exemption to the state law that prohibits the possession of firearms on school grounds., in their roles “in support of school-sanctioned activities.” A lawyer for the plaintiffs filed a notice of appeal with the First District Court of Appeals on Jan. 3.
