    INTERNET SCAMMERS APPLY FOR COVID-19 ECONOMIC INJURY DISASTER LOAN IN LAWYER’S NAME

    Internet scammers recently used a Tampa attorney’s name, address, and other personal identifying information, including business Tax ID Number, to apply for a hefty U.S. Small Business Administration loan. “I was looking at my credit report, and I saw the inquiry on Experian from the U.S. Small Business Administration, and when I contacted them, they said, ‘Oh, yeah, it was for $486,000.’” The attorney’s advice to fellow Bar members – take cybersecurity seriously.

    FREED TO RUN TOTAL: $1.9 MILLION FOR CIVIL LEGAL AID

    Attorney Mike Freed crossed the finish line in front of the Duval County Courthouse about 4 p.m. Nov. 20, the fifth time in five years he ran from Tallahassee to Jacksonville in six days to raise money to help children with illnesses and their families. Pledges from sponsors and relay runners, matched at 125 percent by the Baptist Health Foundation, add $405,000 this year to the North Florida Medical Legal Partnership endowment at Jacksonville Area Legal Aid.

    SEMINOLE TRIBE APPEALS COURT DECISION AGAINST GAMING COMPACT

    The Seminole Tribe of Florida is appealing a ruling that throws out a new Gaming Compact with the state of Florida. The Tribe late Tuesday [Nov. 23] filed its notice of appeal in federal courts. Marcellus Osceola, Seminole Tribe chairman, in a court filing maintains the agreement negotiated with Gov. Ron DeSantis should be considered valid.

    A JURY FINDS CVS, WALGREENS AND WALMART LIABLE FOR HELPING FUEL THE OPIOID CRISIS

    A federal jury on Tuesday [Nov. 23] found three of the nation’s biggest pharmacy chains, CVS, Walgreens and Walmart, liable for helping to fuel the U.S. opioid crisis — a decision that’s expected to have legal repercussions as thousands of similar lawsuits move forward in courts across the country. A separate legal proceeding will now take place to determine how much the companies will have to pay to help remedy the crisis, with damages likely to run into the billions of dollars.
