YLD presents Pro Bono Scholarship Award
THE YOUNG LAWYERS DIVISION’S inaugural Pro Bono Scholarship Award was presented to Benjamin Irving, a recent graduate of Florida A&M University College of Law, for completing more than 750 pro bono hours through FAMU’s legal clinic. “I have always been a full-time student who commutes from Ocala to Orlando to attend school,” Irving wrote in his application. “I am also paralyzed due to being shot in the back in 2004, and I have a bullet lodged in my spinal cord.” Irving said being disabled, “I fight to make my way through school to be able to be an example to people with disabilities that they can still get out in this world and accomplish their goals.” The award came with a scholarship to attend one of Barbri’s bar exam prep courses. Irving performed the pro bono work and attended law school despite regularly suffering from inflammation in his arms and muscle spasms.
