Bar supports delinquency proceedings study

Acting on the request of the Bar’s Legal Needs of Children Committee, the Board of Governors has endorsed a proposed ABA study of access to counsel and quality of representation in Florida delinquency proceedings.

The panel asked the board for its support, and the Legislation Committee reviewed that request and added its endorsement. The board acted at its June 3 meeting.

Legislation Committee Chair Sharon Langer said the ABA’s National Juvenile Defender Center is considering evaluating the Florida juvenile justice system regarding the quality of legal representation for defendants. The assessment would be done this summer with a report likely issued in the fall.

The board’s action authorized outgoing President Kelly Overstreet Johnson to write a letter to the ABA supporting the study.
