Bar to offer weekly tech tips

Bar members will soon get weekly tips on dealing with ever-changing technology issues affecting the practice of law on the Bar’s website.

Michelle Suskauer The Board of Governors approved that and three other tech-related recommendations from the Communications Committee at the board’s Ameila Island meeting.

Communications Committee Chair Michelle Suskauer said the committee recommended that weekly advice be posted on the home page of the Bar’s website,,

Bar staff is now selecting determining subjects for the tech tips, determining who will write them, and when the information will begin appearing.

Topics for the weekly technology advice may come from one of the committee’s other recommendations approved by the board.

That was to include in the upcoming annual membership survey questions about how Bar members use technology. The committee also recommended a separate electronic survey of members on how they use technology in their practices.

The committee recommended that the Leadership Academy be authorized to conduct a pilot project using Facebook and LinkedIn outside of the current social media policy but with use of public records retention software and report back to the committee in May.

The panel’s final recommendation was to use social media to better publicize the activities of the Bar president via Facebook and Twitter under current Bar social media policies.

The proposal prompted Bar President Eugene Pettis to quip, “I’m not sure who wants to know what I’m doing every day, but we’ll find out.”

On related matters, Suskauer reported the computer app the Bar developed for the Annual Convention was a success with 896 unique users for that product. Another app is planned for the 2014 annual gathering, she said.

The committee is working on an app that will allow Bar members to check their status on CLE credits and to post credit for courses they’ve taken. That will be added to current app for the Bar News and to give members quick access via handheld devices to the website’s Find a Lawyer function.
