Last week, Microsoft released an emergency update that addresses a recently discovered and serious security risk. It is important for you and any other Windows users in your firm to install this update.

Your computer may have automatically downloaded, installed, and restarted all on its own – if it did, great! You can always confirm by checking to see if there any updates available.

To check for and install available updates, follow these steps:

  1. Image showing how to check for Windows updatesClick the Windows button and start typing “check for updates” – before you have even finished typing, Windows should start filtering results and offer the option to do so. Once you see it, click on the Check for updates option.
  2. In the following window, Windows may start searching for updates and/or you may see any of these options: Check for Updates, Restart (to install updates) or Download (updates). A status line will indicate if updates are being downloaded.
  3. You can click the Updates Are Available link to see all optional or important updates link and install them.
  4. Click to select available critical or optional updates that you want to install and then click the OK button and follow all prompts to complete the update process.
