A Message from Your Florida Bar President

July 28, 2015

Fellow Florida Bar Members:

I want to clarify any concerns you may have on the issue of admission by motion/reciprocity.  There has been no action taken by the Board of Governors on this issue.

While media coverage may have suggested otherwise, the topic of admission by motion/reciprocity has only been one part of a broader analysis.  Our goal to date has been simple: to study the many issues impacting the practice of law in Florida and throughout the country. That analysis is a result of a process called Vision 2016 begun two years ago by then-Bar President Eugene Pettis who established a commission to identify challenges facing the legal profession, analyze issues and make recommendations.

Vision 2016 is currently studying a number of issues that concern all lawyers, including legal education, technology, bar admissions and access to legal services.  These are all very significant topics that deserve both our attention and careful consideration. Not only are these essential to our practice, they are topics that we are obligated to consider
as dictated by our strategic plan.

At the July 24 meeting of The Florida Bar Board of Governors, a Vision 2016 subgroup presented the Board with a preliminary report and recommendations. No action or vote was taken by the Board on the report.  I encourage you all to review the report at
http://www.floridabar.org/vision2016 and provide any comments, feedback or concerns you may have using the contact email addresses provided.

I encourage you to express your opinions on any issue, report or recommendation coming out of Vision 2016. I assure you that your input will be taken into consideration before the Board takes any action.

Thank you,

Ramón A. Abadin

Introduction to the President

Ramon A. Abadin, President of The Florida Bar, 2015-2016

Ramón A. Abadin is a partner in the Miami office of Sedgwick LLP, where he focuses on complex commercial, insurance and corporate litigation.

Abadin's focus as Bar president is on technology and challenging the Bar’s membership and leadership to recognize the transformation revolutionizing the legal services marketplace and to embrace that change. He joined the Bar's Board of Governors in 2006. He has chaired the Legal Education Committee of the Vision 2016 Commission, an in-depth study of the future practice of law.

Abadin, who received his J.D. degree from Loyola University New Orleans School of Law in 1985 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University in 1981, is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

His family immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1961, when he was 2 years old. His father, who was a lawyer in Cuba, worked odd jobs in this country to support his family.
Abadin worked his way through college with jobs that included laboring on a dredge boat in the Mississippi River. As an adult, he has had a taste for adventure, trying anything from rafting to cave diving.

He is married to Kimberly Cook, who is managing partner in the same Miami office of Sedgwick LLP, and they have three children.

Abadin was recently inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is a member of the Florida Chapters of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, and the International Association of Defense Counsel. He is a past president of the Cuban American Bar Association (2004) and is a lifetime fellow of The Florida Bar Foundation. He was a member and chair of the 3rd District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission (2004-2008). He was the 11th U.S. Circuit representative to the American Bar Association Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary (2010-2013).

Abadin is certified “AV” by the Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating system and has received numerous awards, including the prestigious G. Kirk Haas Humanitarian Award from the Florida Bar. He also has been recognized by the Haitian Lawyers Association, with that group’s Significant Contribution Award, and has received the Passing on Leadership Award from the Cuban American Bar Association.
