Getting Involved with Bar Work: We Can Make a Difference Together

President of The Florida Bar President's Page

As I reflect on my journey as an attorney, I can unequivocally say that my involvement with The Florida Bar and local bar associations has transformed my life in ways I never anticipated.

Joining the Cuban American Bar Association (CABA) was not just a professional decision; it was a catalyst for personal growth, deep friendships, and a broadened perspective on the law. I encourage you, my fellow attorneys, to seize the opportunity to engage with The Florida Bar, your local bar association, or an affinity bar association. The rewards are immeasurable.

Getting active in a bar association offers much more than networking opportunities; it provides a platform for collaboration, advocacy, and community service. CABA’s Pro Bono Project, for instance, exemplifies how we can effect positive change in the lives of those in need. By providing free legal assistance to low-income residents of Florida, CABA not only upholds our ethical obligations as lawyers but also fosters a sense of fulfillment and purpose. These are the moments that remind us why we chose to become lawyers.

Moreover, organizations like the Lee County Bar Association are making strides in mental health and wellness, offering free confidential therapy sessions for active Florida Bar attorneys in the county. This initiative reflects a growing awareness of the pressures we face in our profession and underscores the importance of supporting one another. In a field that often demands so much of us, it’s vital to have resources that promote our mental well-being.

The Jacksonville Bar Association, with its rich history and vibrant membership, embodies the spirit of collegiality and service. With nearly 2,000 members and over 120 events each year, the JBA creates numerous opportunities for professional development, networking, and community engagement. The JBA’s commitment to fostering respect for the law and promoting the highest ideals of our profession is something we should all aspire to contribute to.

My own journey in bar leadership began in 2001 when I joined CABA’s board. Initially intimidated by the prospect of serving alongside experienced leaders, I found a welcoming environment that encouraged my growth. That support was pivotal. As I moved through various leadership roles, including serving as CABA’s president and later on The Florida Bar Board of Governors, I realized that these experiences were not just about advancing my career; they were about enriching my life and the lives of those around me.

In these roles, I learned about various areas of the law, gained valuable business insights, and developed friendships that have lasted a lifetime.

It is a testament to the fact that our profession is as much about relationships as it is about the law itself. I urge you to dive in — join a committee, attend a meeting, or volunteer for a project. You might find that your contributions not only benefit others but also enhance your own practice.

Looking ahead, I am committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and kindness within our Bar. My vision is to create a “softer, kinder, gentler Bar” where attorneys feel empowered to collaborate and innovate. We are all navigating strict deadlines and high-stakes situations, and it is crucial to establish an environment that encourages us to connect and support one another.

Engagement with The Florida Bar, its sections, and local associations is not a duty, but an opportunity to practice law more effectively and joyously. When we come together, we can tackle the challenges facing our profession and serve our communities more effectively. Your voice matters, and your participation can lead to meaningful change.

I invite each of you, whether you are a seasoned attorney or young lawyer, to explore the myriad of ways to get involved — be it through pro bono work, mental health initiatives, or leadership roles. The journey may seem daunting at first, but the rewards — friendships, professional growth, and a profound sense of purpose — are well worth the effort.

Together, let’s continue to uplift our profession and each other. Join me in this endeavor. Let’s build a future for The Florida Bar and the profession that is vibrant, inclusive, and impactful.

As we approach the November 5 election, I want to emphasize the vital role each of you plays in our justice system. Early voting is already underway, and it’s crucial that we, as attorneys, exercise our right to vote and make our voices heard. I urge you all to prioritize this civic duty and participate in the election. Together, let’s ensure that our collective voice contributes to a brighter future for our profession and the society we serve.
