Journal directory is now only online
Editor’s Note : The Florida Bar Board of Governors decided last year to discontinue publication of the September Directory issue. With the availability of most of the information in the printed directory online, the continued migration of advertisers from print medium to the Internet, and the rising cost of postage and paper, the board felt that the time had come to cease publication of a printed directory. The
Journal, however, will continue to print 10 issues a year, including a combined September/October issue.

For the first time since 1954, members of The Florida Bar will not be receiving a printed copy of The Florida Bar Journal’s annual directory edition this year.
But don’t despair; all the information contained in the ever-growing “phone book” of Florida lawyers is now available — and continuously updated throughout the year — on the Bar’s website at www.floridabar.org .
Writing in the inaugural 1954 Journal directory, then Bar President Darry A. Davis said: “Its purpose is to make readily accessible to each member pertinent data concerning The Florida Bar and allied organizations.”
The first directory edition was published as a 224-page supplement to the Journal and was sent to all 6,077 Florida lawyers.
It wasn’t until 1959 that telephone numbers were added to the directory.
1971, there were 12,361 members, and an editorial note in the book indicated that it took 53,000 pounds of paper (a boxcar full) and 150 pounds of ink (one drum) to print.
E-mail addresses and fax numbers made their debuts in 1998.
The 2009 — and last — directory was 859 pages and was sent to about 90,000 members. In all, it totaled more than 77.3 million pages of paper.
The directory edition will be replaced with a combined September/October regular issue of the Journal.
