The Alternative Dispute Resolution Section’s inaugural Mentoring Academy brought together 25 participants and 14 faculty members for an interactive mediation workshop.

The two-day course was designed to connect less-experienced certified mediators with more established Florida mediators for instruction, networking and mentoring.

Mediators Christina Magee and John Salmon were co-creators of the academy. They and their committee members structured the curriculum around sessions in which participants honed their mediation skills on a complex, circuit-civil fact pattern and received immediate feedback on techniques and strategies.

“The reaction of participants has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Magee, who served as 2018-19 ADR Section chair. “Our faculty members also reported that they picked up insights and approaches from fellow faculty and participants to add to their repertoires.”

The event took place at the University of South Florida’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation. Plans are underway for the fall 2020 mentoring academy.
