Animal Law Section honors Rikki
THE ANIMAL LAW SECTION presented its inaugural Rikki Mitchell Memorial Animal Achievement Award to therapy dog, Rikki, who was trained to go to hospitals, courthouses, and schools. Rikki passed away just short of her 12th birthday earlier this year. She had more than 25,000 interactions in her long therapy career. Her Tallahassee trainer, Chuck Mitchell, center, and his wife, Patty, accepted the award from immediate past Chair Ralph DeMeo. Rikki was the driving force behind the 2011 law that allowed therapy dogs to be used in court, and this is how she came to the attention of what was then the Animal Law Committee of The Florida Bar.
