Annual ConventionFrom countering ransomware attacks to navigating the grievance process, Florida Bar members can learn the latest trends, and earn free CLE, at the 2023 Master’s Seminar on Ethics.

“Whether it is running conflict checks, maintaining client confidentiality, using technology, or holding client funds, the Rules of Professional Conduct play a role in every lawyer’s practice,” according to a Professional Ethics Committee statement.

The June 23 seminar is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon at the Annual Florida Bar Convention in Boca Raton. Intermediate Level Course No. 7168 is approved for 4.0 CLE hours, (Ethics 4.0/Technology 1.0).

The seminar is divided into three segments and culminates with a “Judicial Roundtable on Ethics.”

PEC member Carolina Saavedra will moderate a roundtable panel that includes U.S. District Judge Wendy Williams Berger; 15th Circuit Judge Luis Delgado, Jr.; Ninth Circuit Judge Tarlika Nunez-Navarro; and Sixth District Court of Appeal Judge Carrie Ann Wozniak.

From 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., “Cybersecurity, Ethics and the Law,” will feature cybersecurity and privacy law experts Mary Frantz, Eric Hibbard, Tatiana Melnik, and Steven Teppler.

“The post-pandemic challenges for attorneys working remotely and using a variety of computing devices and methods (desktops, laptops, mobile devices, “cloud” or “virtualized” computing, etc.) have also amplified an attorney’s professional and ethical obligations directed to competency, confidentiality, and supervision,” the sponsors note.

HIPAA covered health care and other personally identifiable information are of “particular concern,” the sponsors warn.

From 9 a.m. to 9:35 a.m., the seminar turns to “Trends in Bar Grievances: Why are Lawyers Getting into Trouble and How Are They Being Punished?”

Veteran Florida Bar Staff Counsel Patricia Ann Toro Savitz will outline the grievance process and discuss the latest trends in disciplinary cases. The segment will highlight “what conduct is getting lawyers into trouble with the Bar, and how they are being punished.”

“Ms. Savitz also will discuss how the Bar’s grievance system works and what to expect if a grievance is filed against you,” the sponsors note.

From 9:50 a.m. to 11 a.m., the seminar transitions to a “Practitioner’s Panel: Practical Solutions to Keep You Out of Trouble.”

Former President Hank Coxe will moderate a panel of attorneys who represent attorneys in disciplinary cases. It includes Gwendolyn H. Daniel; Warren Lindsey; D. Culver “Skip” Smith; and David B. Rothman.

“These experienced practitioners will discuss what to expect if a Bar complaint is filed against you, how to avoid complaints in the first place, and what trends they see happening in disciplinary cases.”
