CABA hosts Judicial Forum and Luncheon in Miami

Board of Governors member Jorge Piedra, from the left, Florida Bar President Roland Sanchez-Medina, Jr., Justice John Curiel, and Cuban American Bar Association President Javier Ley-Soto all spoke at CABA’s recent Judicial Forum and Luncheon in Miami. “The forum is important considering these races are the most difficult for people to figure out who deserves their vote,” said Ley-Soto. “It was insightful to learn more about the candidates and incumbents alike and consider valuable insight on their record.”

The Cuban American Bar Association held its 2024 Judicial Forum and Luncheon August 2 on Key Biscayne.

The full day of programming included three continuing legal education sessions led by local legal professionals. The CLE topics discussed included:

  • From the High Court: High Standards for Professionalism and Ethics, moderated by Amanda Fernandez, managing partner at Rivero Mestre. The speakers included Justice John D. Couriel, Bar President Roland Sanchez-Medina, Jr., and Board of Governors member Jorge L. Piedra, managing partner at Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton.
  • Tales from Tallahassee: Perspectives from Former General Counsels to Florida’s Governors, was moderated by Roberto “Bob” Martinez, partner at Colson Hicks Edison. The speakers included Robert H. Fernandez, managing partner at RHF Law Firm; Raquel “Rocky” A. Rodriguez, shareholder at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney; and Paul Huck, Jr., shareholder at Lawson Huck Gonzalez.
  • Conferring About the New Conferral Rules: Updates to the Florida Rules, moderated by Patrick Montoya, a senior partner at Milberg Coleman Bryson Phillips Grossman. The speakers included 11th Circuit Judge Gina Beovides; 11th Circuit Administrative Judge Jose M. Rodriguez, and 11th Circuit Administrative Judge Lourdes Simon.

The programs were followed by the Judicial Forum and Luncheon where the judicial candidates as well as those for Clerk of Court and Comptroller were able to discuss their experience and record. CABA President Javier Ley-Soto gave the opening remarks followed by 11th Circuit Chief Judge Nushin Sayfie.
