Judge Clay Roberts and Judge Jonathan Gerber are the recipients of the Chief Justice’s Judicial Excellence Award, recognizing the two appellate judges’ exceptional commitment to the judicial branch and their outstanding contributions to the state of Florida.

“Judge Gerber and Judge Roberts stand out as leaders and judges. Their work on behalf of judicial branch priorities has been essential during my time as chief justice and for those who served before me,” Chief Justice Carlos Muñiz said. “Both are outstanding judges whose experience and talents have been vital to the administration of justice in Florida.”

Judge Gerber has been a judge on the Fourth District Court of Appeal since 2009, including a term as its chief judge. Before then he was a circuit judge in the 15th Judicial Circuit and a county judge in Palm Beach County.

Judge Gerber has a long record of service to the branch, including his current time on the Supreme Court Judicial Management Council, the Judicial Qualifications Commission, and the Conference of District Court of Appeal Judges. He has previously worked on the District Court of Appeal Budget Commission and the District Court of Appeal Education Committee. He has been a valued part of court leadership, including years of service in support of the branch legislative and budget priorities.

Judge Roberts has experience in all three branches of state government and has served on the First District Court of Appeal since 2007, including as its chief judge.

Judge Roberts also has a long record of service on the Conference of District Court of Appeal Judges, the District Court of Appeal Budget Commission, and the Conference of District Court Judges Legislative Committee. He has also been a vital part of court leadership, including years of service in support of branch legislative and budget priorities.

Chief Justice Muñiz said Judge Gerber and Judge Roberts have been a dynamic, successful, effective pair. Judge Roberts and Judge Gerber both worked together on the budget commission and both served as its chair.

“Jonathan and Clay are joined in their commitment to excellence on the bench and the benefit they have provided the people of Florida. I am pleased to honor them together,” Chief Justice Muñiz said.

The Chief Justice’s Judicial Excellence Award recognizes judges who demonstrate exceptional commitment to the judicial branch and who personify judicial excellence, embodying qualities such as strength of character, integrity, fairness, open-mindedness, knowledge of the law, and sound judgment.
