Clerk warns of fake DMV traffic ticket scam texts

Top Stories

Scam AlertThe Manatee County Clerk is warning the public about a recurring scam involving fraudulent text messages about unpaid traffic tickets.

Beginning Friday, December 5, fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles began circulating. The messages stated the recipient had an outstanding traffic fine and urged immediate payment to avoid severe penalties, including:

  • Suspension of vehicle registration and driving privileges
  • Placement in the DMV violation database
  • Additional fees and potential prosecution

"This isn't the first time we've seen this scam — it appeared back in May with the exact same messaging," said Angel Colonneso, Clerk of the Circuit Court & Comptroller. "We will never demand payment via text message. My office will notify you by mail using official letterhead regarding unpaid traffic citations.”

Colonneso urges, “If you receive one of these messages, don't click the link — just delete it.”
