Former CABA president appointed a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge

Judge Corali Lopez-Castro
Corali Lopez-Castro was recently sworn in as a bankruptcy judge for the Southern District of Florida’s Miami Division.
She fills the seat vacated by Judge Jay Cristol following his retirement earlier this year. Judge Lopez-Castro was appointed by the United States Court of Appeals of the 11th Circuit which appoints all bankruptcy judges in Florida.
Judge Lopez-Castro, who practiced with Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton, is no stranger to the interworking of the court, serving on the panel of trustees for the Southern District. She’s taken on commercial Chapter 11 cases, bankruptcy-related litigation, and commercial litigation in state and federal court.
A 1990 law graduate of the University of Miami, Judge Lopez-Castro served as president of the Cuban American Bar Association in 2006 becoming only the second woman to lead CABA.
In 2014, Lopez-Castro was named a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy based on her record of leadership, professionalism, and expertise in bankruptcy practice. Throughout her legal career, Judge Lopez-Castro has mentored young lawyers, encouraged diversity on the bench, and promoted pro bono legal services.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Judge Lopez-Castro is a former chair of the Bankruptcy/Uniform Commercial Code Committee of the Business Law Section.
