Going to the Annual Florida Bar Convention? Why not donate blood while you're in Boca
Annual Florida Bar Convention attendees are invited to give the gift of life by donating blood at the One Blood Big Red Bus on Friday, June 27 between 9 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. outside the Mizner Center.
“The need is very much there,” said Susan Forbes with One Blood. “It’s a challenging time of year with hurricane season.”
While the donation procedure typically takes 10-15 minutes, extra time is needed to fill out forms, perform a wellness checkup prior to the donation, and rest afterward. One Blood recommends donors to be prepared to spend at least 45 minutes for the whole process.
Walk-ins are welcome and setting an appointment is recommended. To sign up for a donation appointment, click here or visit oneblood.org/donate-now and enter sponsor code 77518 in the search field.
Participants are required to show their ID, then receive a wellness checkup including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron count, and cholesterol screening prior to donating. As a token of appreciation, each donor is given a $20 e-gift card and a trucker hat.
While the need for donations generally increases during the summer, which is when donations typically decrease, the need exists year-round for people suffering from illnesses requiring transfusions like sickle cell anemia and cancer treatment.
Donor “Allan” from Thonotosassa says, “In 2008, I was in a serious car accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury and coma. Once I recovered, I wanted to help others any way I could. One way I could do that is by becoming a regular platelet donor at my local donor center. I’ve given over 9 gallons and will continue to give to help others live.”
Forbes added that less than 5% of those who can donate do so.
“Summertime is a great time to start, if you’ve never donated,” says Forbes. “You’re literally giving somebody a second chance to live.”
When you are done giving blood, consider taking in some of the 14.5 hours of free CLE that is also available during Annual Convention. While there is no cost to attend, registration is required. To select the course, choose “limited access pass” when registering. Visit the CLE Opportunities page for course details.
