Health Law Section Chair Jamaal R. Jones, Sr., inspires future lawyers through campus outreach
Jamaal R. Jones, Sr., is spearheading an initiative during his year as Health Law Section chair to promote the practice of health law through outreach presentations at Florida law schools.
Jones aims to educate students on health law’s “dynamic role” in the legal field, share insights into a “day in the life” of a health lawyer, and attempt to inspire a new generation to enter this area of law. Jones has already made strides in his outreach with presentations at Florida State University College of Law and the University of Florida Levin College of Law, with more law school engagements planned throughout 2024 and 2025.
Jones presented “Health Law 101” on September 16 to members of FSU’s Health Law Society and Black Law Students Association. The event drew approximately 40 students, who engaged in a Q&A session and continued the conversation afterward, with some asking questions about joining the Health Law Section and exploring careers as health law attorneys. Attendees enjoyed a catered lunch and received giveaways courtesy of the Health Law Section.
On September 23, Jones and Health Law Section Chair-elect Rupasri S. “Rupa” Lloyd of GrayRobinson joined UF’s Health Law Society for “First GBM: What is Health Law?” Students received Health Law Section swag, including branded koozies, hand sanitizer bottles, and pens, and enjoyed a lunch provided by UF Law.
Jones plans to visit several other law schools across the state to continue promoting health law, including Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law, Jacksonville University College of Law, Ave Maria School of Law, and Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
“Health law plays a critical role in protecting the rights and interests of everyone involved in the healthcare system and ensuring the quality and safety of medical care,” said Jones, founder and principal attorney at Jones Health Law in Miami. “Through our outreach efforts, we hope to inspire students to explore health law as a vital and impactful field of legal practice. Health law is not just about medical malpractice or HIPAA compliance; it also covers areas like public health, end-of-life care, organ donation, and issues impacting Medicare and Medicaid. This field allows attorneys to address pressing challenges and evolving trends in healthcare, which impact individuals and communities alike.”
Jones also emphasized the importance of health law in the public health arena, where it addresses issues such as communicable disease prevention, food safety, and accessibility.
“Health law is at the intersection of individual rights and public welfare. It’s a field that truly allows attorneys to make a difference,” he added.
With a vision for fostering connections and building student interest in health law, Jones hopes his visits will empower law students to understand the diverse opportunities available in health law and join a field that serves both patients and providers.
