Judge Hugh Carithers named second vice president of FFLA

Retired Judge Hugh Carithers took office July 1 as second vice president of FFLA, a statewide charitable organization whose mission is to increase access to the justice system for people of limited means by funding legal services, developing innovative tools and programs, and supporting legal aid providers and the courts.
Before retiring as administrative judge of the Family Division of the Fourth Judicial Circuit, Carithers served all divisions of his court. He was also an associate judge on the First District Court of Appeal. He earned his juris doctor from the University of Florida.
Carithers was appointed to the board of The Florida Bar Foundation, now FFLA, in 2019. He had previously served on its board from 1991 to 1993. He currently serves on five of the board’s committees, including executive, grants, investment, nominating, and the IOTA work group. He previously served as president of both Florida Legal Services’ and Jacksonville Area Legal Aid’s board of directors.
Carithers is an elected fellow of the American Bar Foundation and has served as chair of the Fourth Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee. He received the City of Jacksonville’s Mary Singleton Award in 2004 and the Jacksonville Bar Association’s 2016 Liberty Bell Award.
He is an FFLA Fellow and member of its Silver Society for lifetime giving.
