Gov. Ron DeSantis has appointed 17th Circuit Judge Johnathan D. Lott to the Fourth District Court of Appeal, the circuit announced Friday.

“It’s an honor to have been selected by the governor,” Lott said in a brief statement.

A Pensacola native and 2014 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, Lott was appointed circuit judge by DeSantis last November and has been on bench since January 1.

“Your appointment is evidence of my utmost confidence in your ability to serve with excellence and distinction,” DeSantis said in an October 30 letter informing Lott of the appointment.

Chief Judge Carol-Lisa Phillips called Lott a respected jurist who is well-liked by his colleagues. She noted that he serves in a “very challenging” unified family division.

“We are so proud of him and will miss him but know he will be an awesome addition to the appellate court,” Phillips said.

According to a circuit biography, Lott is a member of the Young Lawyers Division and worked for four years for the U.S. attorney in a civil division.

Serving Broward County, the 17th Circuit is the state’s second-largest. Its 90 judges serve in the Broward County Courthouse in Ft. Lauderdale and satellite courthouses in Deerfield Beach, Plantation and Hollywood.
