Lawson, Westheimer, Sayfie to headline ‘First Principles of Professionalism’ program
Retired Supreme Court Justice Alan Lawson, Florida Bar President Scott Westheimer, and judges from across the state will headline the 2024 Professionalism Conference on April 5.
The 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. program at the Circle Square Cultural Center in Ocala will focus on “First Principles of Professionalism.”
Sponsored by the Professionalism Committee of the Fifth Judicial Circuit, the event concludes with a late afternoon professionalism awards ceremony.
Lawson, an advocate for mental health and wellness, is scheduled to present, “Professionalism and the Pursuit of Happiness: An Unexpected Connection Our Founders Understood.”
Westheimer, the Bar’s 75th president, pledged at his swearing in ceremony to promote the Bar’s core mission of lawyer discipline and protecting the public.
He is scheduled to present, “How to Avoid Florida’s Lawyer Discipline System.”
Eleventh Circuit Chief Judge Nushin Sayfie will present, “Professionalism and Uncivil Behavior.”
The focus shifts to technology in the afternoon when Fourth District Court of Appeal Chief Judge Mark Klingensmith presents, “Chat GPT: What Will the Judiciary’s Future Look Like?” Florida Bar board member Gordon Glover, who co-chairs the Special Committee on AI Tools & Resources, rounds out the program with a half-hour presentation.
