Lee County clerk warns of a ‘missed court appearance’ scam

Scam AlertLee County Clerk of the Court & Comptroller Kevin Karnes’ office is warning of a ‘missed court appearance’ scam that preying on the public.

In a Facebook post, the clerk says this scam comes in the form of an email referencing a phony missed court appearance.

“Unlike past scams, these emails attempt to retrieve personal data, forcefully, by a computer virus attached as a .zip file.” the warning says. “These malicious attachments contain a ‘Trojan Horse’ virus that becomes active as soon as the file is unzipped. Always use caution when opening an unsolicited email and do not open the attachments.”
