Legal Services of Greater Miami honors its pro bono partners

LSGM Pro Bono AwardsLegal Services of Greater Miami (Legal Services) participated in National Pro Bono Week by hosting its Annual Pro Bono Celebration October 26.

Manuel M. del Cañal of Ocean Bank, the event’s sponsor, welcomed over 100 members of the business and legal community who gathered to commend about 300 pro bono volunteers for their contributions over the past year.

Chief Judge Cecilia M. Altonaga of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, praised the honorees for their pro bono service and noted “their actions are guided by empathy.”  She further expressed how the impact of pro bono attorneys “goes beyond the confines of the courtroom and touches the lives of families.”

Legal Services CEO Monica Vigues-Pitan (pictured in the middle) presented the 2023 Equal Justice Pro Bono Impact Award to Hunton Andrews Kurth. Accepting the award are Jamie Zysk and Gil Acevedo.

The 2023 Equal Justice Pro Bono Awards were given for exceptional contributions to equal justice in the following categories:

  • Large Firm Award:McDermott Will & Emery
  • Special Project of the Year Award: White & Case
  • Corporate Partner Award: Santander Bank
  • Impact Award:Hunton Andrews Kurth
  • Rising Star Award: Vanessa Offutt
  • Tax Clinic Award: Anita Friedlander, Steven Klitzner, Michael Lampert, Karen Lapekas, and Joseph Barry Schimmel
  • Champions for Justice Award: Holland & Knight
  • Solo/Small Firm Award: Tomas A. Gonzalez, Jr.
  • Clinic Volunteer Award: Elisabeth Magloire
