Women and the Law
I am writing in response to your lead story in the September 15 News headlined, “Why are women leaving the law?” This article essentially assigns to men the primary blame for women leaving the law.

It’s so easy to assign blame to someone else for disparities among groups, but the reasons for such disparities are rarely so insidious. Pick any group and you will find group disparities in income, wealth (yes, income and wealth are different), social status, profession, skills, education, and so on.

The knee-jerk reaction to such disparities is too often to (1) label the disparities as “bad,” and (2) to lay blame on “them” — a group of people who didn’t make the personal choices that led to the disparities in the first place.

Women need to take responsibility for their own decisions and stop playing the blame game.

Mindfulness
In response to William Drake’s letter against “Mindfulness,” in August, I must say, “Breathe deep the gathering gloom; watch lights fade from every room.”

The term “mindfulness” is an apt description in that one must “mind” that which is essential, and hence full, to be mindful. Breathing techniques are essential as well, to life and to clarity. Without the in and out of everyday confusion, most people would be out of breath.

Place one’s skepticisms aside, and instead enjoy the compassion of having an openness that enlightens all, and embraces all. What could be clearer?

As an ancient and wise rabbi said on his deathbed when questioned about his last-minute conversion, “Better one of them to die.” Yes, we should all shed our harsh exteriors and revel in the new butterfly we all can become. (Disclosure: Moody Blues)
