The Florida Bar Media & Communications Law Committee and the Florida Supreme Court will present a free Reporters’ Workshop about appellate courts and the addition of a brand new Sixth District Court of Appeal.
The remote workshop is from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (EDT) on Tuesday, May 23.
The event is intended for reporters and stakeholders. Attendees need not be members of the media. Registration is required.
The session covers creation of the Sixth District Court of Appeals, changes to the geographical jurisdiction of three other DCAs, and a broad discussion of the structure of Florida’s appellate courts and coverage by media.
The panel of subject-matter experts includes First DCA Chief Judge Lori Rowe, Sixth DCA Judge John K. Stargel, Sixth DCA Clerk Stacey Pectol, Polk County Clerk of Court Stacy Butterfield, media law attorney Rachel Fugate, Office of the State Courts Administrator General Counsel C. Erica White, and former Supreme Court Clerk Tom Hall.
Panelists will discuss the challenges and benefits offered by the first addition of a district court of appeal in Florida since 1979, the changes and effect of jurisdictional changes in other district courts, and a primer on appellate courts in the state. The moderator of the session is General Counsel White who is, along with Hall and Fugate, also a member of The Florida Bar Media & Communications Law Committee.
Mary Nguyen, a Winter Park attorney and vice chair of the committee, will introduce the session.
The Reporters’ Workshop is held in person annually and focuses on journalists new to covering courts and legal issues. This year, a series of remote sessions of the Reporters’ Workshop will be offered to supplement the in-person event.
This event will provide CLE credits for participating attorneys.
